Credit Insurance explained

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

It is widely believed that credit insurance can only be obtained on the back of a factoring or invoice discounting facility. This is not necessarily the case and it might be that you can obtain a better deal from an independent company. You may also wonder why one invoice finance company can insure one of your customers but not another. Hopefully this article will explain some of the misconceptions.

Any business can go to a specialist insurance company to obtain credit insurance. The broker will go to the various insurance companies and obtain a packaged policy from the best insurance company. There are a number of fundamental differences which may work in your favour.

Firstly credit insurance companies provided by the banks and the factoring and invoice discounting companies only kick in in the event of an insolvency situation. It is indeed possible to obtain credit insurance that kicks in in the event of a protracted claim. As far as we are aware we there is only one invoice discounting company that provides credit insurance in the event of a protracted dispute. Call me cynical but does anyone else think that factoring companies allow debtors to exceed 90 days so they can.

Secondly factoring and invoice discounting companies  charge against the gross ledger as opposed to the net ledger which is possible to do via the correct means.

Thirdly once a debt has exceed 60 days over the normal credit terms the insurance provider will chase the debt on your behalf provided. It doesn’t matter if if your factoring company is supposed to be doing it. two so to speak is better than one

It also possible to get credit insurance for export debt as well

You may also wonder why one factoring company can insure a debt another factoring company cannot..

Happy New Year from XL Business Finance

Friday, January 1st, 2010

Unlikely anyone is reading the blog today especially when most people will be hung over in  some form or another. However we wanted to take the opportunity to wish all our customers all the very  best for 2010. Most of will be delighted that 2009 is behind us which can only be described as the worst year from a business point of view that any us can remember. Anyone who says that they have had a great year is lying. Most businesses have been treading water at best and the ones that have survived 2009 and can survive the continued turmoil in 2010 will undoubtedly be in a very strong position when things eventually start to pick up.

Although there were signs at the back of 2009 that business was starting to pick up 2009 has very much been a year of peaks and troughs and hopefully for your business the peaks have just about been better than the troughs. In our opinion the economy in its very fragile condition will bumble along during 2010 and hopefully we will see a big improvement during the latter part of the year. We expect the banks and high street finance companies to continue to be difficult and as such raising any kind of business finance via the high street will be extremely difficult.

On the up side there are plenty of privately owned finance companies looking for the right kind of deal. Whether it is a finance lease or a hire purchase facility required to help with your capital expenditure requirements or you are looking for a factoring or invoice discounting facility to release cash against your unpaid debtors there will be a finance company somewhere that will be willing and able to help most businesses and scenarios! XL Business Finance wishes every single business all the best in 2010. Lets hope its better than last year!!

Is invoice finance better than an overdraft

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

In our opinion most definitely yes!  Invoice finance will provide instantaneous cash against your unpaid invoices. The facility within reason  will grow with your business and in terms of security it is far less onerous than any bank overdraft facility.

The problem with overdrafts is that it is very difficult to get an adequate facility unless the business is very profitable or a business has a significant amount of property they can put up as security. And less face it 99% of businesses nowadays don’t fall into this category.   The other big problem with bank overdrafts is that they are repayable on demand. If you file a poor set of figures or present your bank manager with a  iffy management accounts you run the risk of having your overdraft pulled from under you. Once upon a time most people new that this was the case but had never actually heard of it happening. Unfortunately nowadays it is happening all the time. We are constantly hearing of horror stories of high street lenders being unable to renew overdraft facilities and leaving businesses in a right old pickle.

This would never happen with an invoice discounting or factoring facility. These forms of debtor finance are secured against the unpaid invoices. The facility grows with the business  and the invoice finance facility use their expertise to collect the debt on your behalf. The problem is that banks will try and persuade their customers to use their own factoring companies and in our experience these bank based lender don’t always provide the same flexibility and expertise of some of the independent companies.
